What life modelling jobs pay in the UK

Life modelling sessions are paid per hour or per session at a rate the class or group sets, agreed before you attend. A college art department, a community drawing group and a private sitting will each pay differently, so ask for the figure and the session length in writing when the booking is offered.

How you are paid matters as much as how much. Colleges and universities usually put models through payroll, which means a form to fill in before your first session and tax deducted at source; the Register of Artists' Models notes that many employers now treat models as employees for exactly this reason. Private groups and individual artists tend to pay on the day. Either way, confirm the rate, whether breaks are paid, and whether travel is covered before you turn up, because a two-hour evening class in another town can cost most of its fee in fares.

Life modelling jobs follow the academic year, so work is fullest from September to early summer and thin in August. Regulars who are reliable and easy to book fill their diaries first. Where life model jobs are found

Life model jobs come from four places: art schools and college art departments, community life drawing groups, model registers such as the Register of Artists' Models, and individual artists, studios and photographers. Paid figure work for photographers also appears as castings on Climaxx Media when the booker wants an ID-verified model.

Art schools and colleges. Fine art and foundation courses run timetabled life classes and keep a model list for the year. Email the course leader or the technician who runs the studio, say you are 18 or over, give your availability and ask to be added. Bookings are usually made term by term.

Community life drawing groups. Evening and weekend groups in pubs, community centres and studios book one model per session and are the easiest first job. Find them through local listings and the groups' own social pages, and ask the organiser what they pay and how long the session runs.

Model registers. The Register of Artists' Models is the long-standing UK register: it is not an agency, takes no commission, and lets tutors search registered models by area. Some regions and cities run their own lists as well.

Artists, studios and photographers. Painters and sculptors book private sittings, and photographers book figure models for art nude work. What a first life modelling session is like

A first session opens with a run of short warm-up poses, then longer held poses with a break between each. The tutor sets the timing and calls the breaks, you change behind a screen or in a side room, and a robe and a heater are normal, so ask for both if they are not offered.

Poses. Short poses are dynamic: twisting, reaching, standing. Longer poses are ones you can hold without strain, so choose seated or reclining positions and note where your hands and feet are so you can return to the same pose after a break. Bring a couple of standing and a couple of seated poses you have practised at home, and expect the tutor to suggest adjustments for the group's angle and the light.

Respect rules. Nobody touches the model, the tutor is the only person who directs the pose, and any request goes through them. Phones and cameras stay away while you are posing; there is no photography of any kind without your explicit agreement beforehand, and a reference shot for a painting is a separate request with its own consent. If anything in the room makes you uncomfortable, say so to the tutor and stop. Reputable groups will back you without argument.

Afterwards. Arrive early, hold what you agreed to hold, and you will be asked back. Most groups book their reliable models before they try new ones, so the first session is the hard one and the diary fills from there.

Life modelling versus nude modelling for photographers

Life modelling is art work: you pose for people drawing or sculpting you, no camera is involved and the class pays a session rate. Nude modelling for photographers is a separate, better paid booking with its own consent, release and rate, and the explicit end of it is adult work.

The difference is the image. A drawing stays in a sketchbook; a photograph is published, sold and kept, which is why photographers pay more and why every shoot needs a written agreement covering the level you are shooting, where the pictures may appear and what you are paid. The comfort level is the same as a life class, so many life models add art nude modelling as their first step up, and some go on to nude modelling jobs at glamour, erotic and adult levels, each agreed separately and paid at its own rate.

Keep the two apart in your head and in your bookings. A life class has not agreed to photography, and a photographer has not booked a life model; agree each on its own terms, hold the line on what you have agreed, and both kinds of life model jobs stay easy to take.
